THE CENTRE SPINE

A centre spine staircase is a modern staircase design characterised by a single structural spine that supports the treads and risers. Also known as a central stringer or mono stringer staircase, the steel spine runs through the middle and acts as the primary load-bearing element, providing stability for the entire structure while keeping the profile slim and open.

The stair comprises a series of steel trays fixed to the central spine. Typically, we then clad each tray in solid oak or stone to achieve the finish you want. As a result, you combine the strength of steel with the warmth and texture of natural materials, creating a durable stair that looks refined from every angle.

One notable feature is the open space around the spine. Because the sides remain clear, light moves freely through the stairs and enhances the sense of space in the surrounding area. Consequently, the design feels airy and contemporary, without the bulk of traditional twin-stringer constructions.

For safety and compliance, we install glass balustrades and handrails on one or both sides. In many cases, the glass fixes to the ends of the treads or to an adjacent wall, delivering a seamless edge and an uncluttered line.
