THE STRAIGHT STRING

A straight string staircase uses one or two straight stringers that support the treads along the sides. By contrast, a centre spine staircase relies on a single core through the middle. Depending on whether the stair sits against a wall or in an open space, the stringer can run on one side or both.

Typically, the stringer is fabricated in steel and runs continuously from floor to floor, therefore providing strength and stability. Meanwhile, each tread fixes to the stringer in a clean, linear arrangement. Treads are steel trays clad in timber—often oak—or stone, so you can match the finish to the interior.

Unlike a centre spine design, a straight string stair does not open up as much space around the structure. However, it delivers a neat edge and a clear boundary. For safety, add a balustrade or a solid wall on one or both sides. Glass, timber or metal all work well. In addition, handrails can fix directly to the wall or sit on brackets fixed to the stringer to ensure comfortable use.
